Era
1990s
In the 1990s IKEA’s aesthetic matured. Pale birch, clean lines, and Scandinavian restraint swept away the postmodern colour of the previous decade and proposed a look that would govern living rooms for the next quarter-century.
The defining gesture of the era was the debut of the IKEA PS collection at the Milan furniture fair in 1995, presented under the banner “Democratic Design”. Eighteen young Scandinavian designers produced a tightly curated collection with a strong, minimalist character. Thomas Sandell designed a modular chest of drawers on wheels. Thomas Eriksson created an iconic clock face whose keyhole silhouette was inspired by the upper section of antique floor clocks. Both were simultaneously functional objects and collectibles; the PS collection set a new benchmark for what mass-market design could aspire to be.
The decade also saw the consolidation of IKEA’s children’s range. Knut and Marianne Hagberg, the design duo who joined IKEA in 1979 and went on to create more than two thousand products together, steadily developed the range for younger users, consistently balancing safety with accessible price. Across the broader range, the dominant material combination was pale birch veneer and MDF: budget substrates that, in skilled hands, carried a quiet Scandinavian dignity.
Culturally the 1990s were the years when IKEA transformed from a furniture brand into a global reference point for middle-class life. The catalogue, printed in tens of millions of copies in dozens of languages, was the most widely distributed commercial publication in the world, outpacing even the Bible in annual print runs. Democratic design had moved beyond slogan. It was now an industrial fact.
