STOCKHOLM
STOCKHOLM is IKEA’s flagship premium line, launched in 1985 by Karin Mobring and Tomas Jelinek. It was a response to customers who had outgrown the low pine sofa and were asking for something more refined: better materials, longer life, classical form, all still at “democratic design” prices. The first range was a set of Nordic-birch furniture in three finishes (clear lacquer, white lacquer, red-brown stain), with Indian cotton and leather from Svenljunga in Sweden. IKEA has revisited STOCKHOLM in successive editions (1990, the late 1990s, the 2000s, and beyond), each time with different designers. Every edition keeps a common thread: Scandinavian modernism at the highest quality, simple geometry, high-grade materials. Many STOCKHOLM pieces, long discontinued, now circulate on the vintage market as sought-after collector designs.
