In the 2010s IKEA started treating designer collaborations as a deliberate brand strategy. Limited collections with external creators moved from occasional experiment to a regular signal that the company intended to be taken seriously in the wider design world.

Ilse Crawford’s SINNERLIG collection, launched in 2015, made the point quietly but unmistakably. In an era of triumphant plastics and composite boards, its materials (cork, bamboo, seagrass, ceramic and glass) read as a sensory manifesto. Cork in particular was soft underfoot, sound-dampening, and harvested without felling the tree. More than thirty products demonstrated that democratic design and material honesty could occupy the same price point. Two years later, in 2017, IKEA partnered with Danish studio HAY for YPPERLIG: a 72-piece collection of sofas, chairs, tables, lighting and accessories that showed how rigorous Scandinavian restraint and precise industrial manufacturing could scale to mass distribution without losing their character.

In 2019, Swedish electronic-instrument maker Teenage Engineering collaborated with IKEA on FREKVENS: a modular system of portable cube-shaped speakers and lights in black, red and yellow, available from July 2019 as a limited collection. It sold out quickly and entered the secondary market as a sought-after object within months of launch.

Inside the main catalogue, the decade brought significant reorganisation. In 2014 IKEA retired the EXPEDIT shelving system and replaced it with KALLAX, internally identical but with a slightly thinner outer edge that reduced material use. The outcry from vinyl record collectors, who had relied on EXPEDIT’s exact internal dimensions for LP storage, confirmed that an IKEA product could command genuine emotional loyalty.

The decade closed with sustainability moving from aspiration to stated strategy, and the first stirrings of a secondary market that would treat discontinued IKEA designs as collectibles in their own right.
