Designer
Carina Bengs
Carina Bengs is one of the lead IKEA designers of the period in which the brand consciously leaned into a warmer, “homely” aesthetic, wooden profiles, limed finishes, references to traditional Scandinavian cabinetmaking. She appears in IKEA catalogues from 1997 to 2018, credited across many ranges, including the iconic HEMNES line and pieces such as BRUSALI, MALSJÖ, VITTSJÖ, and FABRIKÖR.
Her work set the visual register of IKEA dining rooms and bedrooms for two decades. HEMNES, for more than twenty years one of the brand’s best-selling bedroom ranges, is the most-cited example of her approach: solid, sturdy solid-wood forms, quiet colours, and the classical proportions of an early-20th-century Scandinavian home translated into the IKEA vocabulary.
